A Record-Breaking Number of Smiles: $106,079.45 Raised for The Mississauga Food Bank Through Tim Hortons® Smile Cookie Campaign

From May 1 to 7, 2023, the Tim Hortons Smile Cookie campaign raised a record-breaking $19.7 million across Canada. In Mississauga, $212,158.90 was raised by local Tim Hortons restaurants across the city, which will be split equally between joint recipients, The Mississauga Food Bank and Community Living Mississauga.

“Thank you to Tim Hortons Restaurant Owners of Mississauga and to our community for supporting neighbours in need through this year’s Smile Cookie campaign. The funds you raised will help provide healthy and appropriate food for 106,079 meals as we face a time where the need is greater than ever,” says Meghan Nicholls, CEO at The Mississauga Food Bank. “Since June 2022, we have seen on average 31% more food bank clients every month compared to the same time last year. Those most vulnerable are grappling with the higher costs of groceries, transportation, rent, and much more. This is why we continue to need our community’s support as food insecurity continues to rise and shows no indication of slowing down.”

“Community Living Mississauga is very fortunate to have such a longstanding relationship with Tim Hortons owners across our city,” said Keith Tansley, Executive Director at Community Living Mississauga. “We want to say thanks to them, as well as everyone who bought Smile Cookies, on behalf of the hundreds of children and youth who have an intellectual disability who have been able to connect with their community through our summer recreational programs thanks to the funds raised by this campaign.”

As we head into the summer season and in-school meal and snack programs close for the school year, children will not have regular access to food that they have relied on for the past 9 months. More and more employed people are now in need of a food bank as well as seniors, those on a fixed income, and newcomers. This results in almost 5% of the entire city of Mississauga now relying on a food bank. As the need continues to climb, community support is as vital as ever.
