It isn’t always easy to ask for help. But when Sahara came to the Food Bank in need of food, she found so much more than groceries— thanks to your generous support. Sahara shared her story with The Mississauga Food Bank about receiving healthy food and finding a supportive community to help her through difficult times.
The food bank is saving me. It’s not only a food bank, believe me. They don’t just support us with food. They support us emotionally. They give us hope. My income is limited and tight. The first time I came to the food bank, I was embarrassed. But the way they welcome you, the hospitality—it’s so nice. Here, you feel you’re not alone. There are some hard times, but when you see the people here, they’re a relief for your pain.
Last May, I had open heart surgery. I started feeling weak and that’s when the problems started. After the surgery, it was not easy for me to stand for more than 6 hours a day, so I had to stop working. It made it even harder to pay my bills each month and buy the food I needed. Each time I come to the food bank, I can get food that is good and healthy for me.
Everyone at the food bank has welcomed me and tried to make things easier. They asked if I wanted to volunteer here and I have loved being part of the team. You are treated like family here. To the people who donate, you are wonderful! What you do is so kind and means a lot. Thank you for doing this for us.
Your generosity makes it possible for neighbours like Sahara to put healthy food on their tables and receive life-changing support so they don’t feel alone. Thank you for providing nourishment and care when our neighbours need it most.
