Every year our volunteers spend thousands of hours providing administrative support to our staff, picking up and sorting food, harvesting fresh produce in AquaGrow Farms, and participating in food drives or fundraisers throughout the community! That’s why we’re excited to introduce you to the newest member of The Mississauga Food Bank’s staff team, Julia De Paz!
Julia started in the role of Volunteer Coordinator in May, and she has a passion for connecting individuals in our community with meaningful volunteer opportunities. We wanted to give you the opportunity to get to know Julia, so we’ve asked her to share what inspires her about her work.
What inspired you to start doing volunteer work?
My motto in life is Mrs. Mead’s quote: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it is the only thing that ever has”. I believe what happens to one of us, affects us all. Furthermore, I believe each one of us has the power to make a difference, whether empowering others to get involved, donating time or dollars.
When did you start working with volunteers and why?
I have been leading volunteers for 14 years. Working with volunteers has allowed me to make an impact in the community whether enhancing the quality of life for seniors, participating in the fight against cancer or promoting volunteerism. For me, working is not only a way to earn a living but a way to grow as a person and contribute to a worthy cause.
Volunteering is a very important part of my life; I have volunteered and currently volunteer in various capacities for causes I care about. I believe volunteering is a life-changing experience, a way to learn new skills, expand our network and make a difference in our community.
What made you want to work with The Mississauga Food Bank?
I moved to the Peel region last April. I was impressed by the ethnic diversity of communities in the region. But I also became aware of the struggles people face – poverty, being one of them. I am inspired by the impact TMFB made last year: 2.9 million meals were provided to hungry neighbours in Mississauga. All thanks to generous donors and volunteers including you! You as a team completed 12,000 hours of volunteering. Outstanding!
I also see that there is so much work to do. Can we be content in a world where our neighbours are lacking essential needs? Local statistics reveal food bank usage has increased. Volunteers play an irreplaceable role in achieving the vision of A Mississauga Where No One Goes Hungry. As we move forward into the future with an increasing need for food, The Mississauga Food Bank continues to count on volunteers like you, to help provide nutritious food to hungry neighbours.
If people want to get more involved in volunteering at the food bank, what should they do?
If you have questions about how to get involved, you can reach me by phone at 905-270-5589 x233 or email me at email@example.com. I am excited for the opportunity to work alongside with you in helping to feed our hungry neighbours!
Ps. If you’re an enthusiastic, energetic individual we need your help! We’re looking for volunteers to become Volunteer Ambassadors. For more information, click here.
