Annual Holiday Drive raised $519,430 and 241,785 pounds of food

Mississauga, January 9, 2017 –  Mississauga has once again demonstrated it is a caring city with a big heart. From November 23 to January 6; families, companies, foundations and community groups contributed generously to feed hungry neighbours through The Mississauga Food Bank’s annual Holiday Food and Fundraising Drive.

By Friday, the community had generously donated $519,430 – breaking the previous year’s record for the Holiday Drive and exceeding this year’s goal of $500,000. Through community food drives, plus collections at local fire stations and grocery stores, the food bank also received 241,785 pounds of food. While the food donated fell short of the food bank’s goal of 275,000 lbs, financial donations will be used to purchase most needed items including fruit, vegetables and protein products.

“We are so grateful for the community’s ongoing generosity,” says Meghan Nicholls, Director of Marketing and Development at The Mississauga Food Bank. “We always say ‘it takes all of us to feed our hungry neighbours’ and Mississauga residents and businesses demonstrated that during this year’s Holiday Drive. To each of those who gave during the Holidays, we extend our sincerest thanks and appreciation.”

The Holiday Drive is the food bank’s largest annual initiative to raise food and funds and was sponsored this year by corporate partners Nissan Canada Foundation and the Just Energy Foundation. Each year, 30% of funds and 20% of food for the entire year are raised during the important Holiday Drive.

The Mississauga Food Bank provides food for over 198,000 meals each month – half of it fresh food. Donations to The Mississauga Food Bank are required year-round and can be made by phone at 905.270.5589 or online at themississaugafoodbank.org/donate-today. For every $2 donated, The Mississauga Food Bank is able to distribute food for 5 meals.
