Mississauga Residents Raise Food and Funds to Provide Food For Over 1.5 Million Meals Through Food Bank’s Holiday Campaign

In November, The Mississauga Food Bank kicked off it’s annual Holiday Food Drive with goals of raising $575,000 and 300,000 pounds of food for hungry families across Mississauga.

Today, the Food Bank is thrilled to announce the community exceed these goals, raising $576,514 and 326,218 pounds of food! The food and funds raised by the holiday campaign will provide food for over 1.5 million meals to hungry neighbours through the coming months.

These resources come to the food bank at a crucial time. According to the 2019 Who’s Hungry Report, visits to food banks in Mississauga increased by 16% in 2019. With an increasing number of individuals, families, and seniors struggling to keep up with the cost of living, the food bank will continue to rely on community support to meet the rising need as hungry neighbours seek support.

“We’re incredibly thankful for the outpouring of community support throughout the Holiday Food Drive,” said Meghan Nicholls, Executive Director of The Mississauga Food Bank. “As we work to keep up with the rising need for food bank services in our city, it makes a huge difference to know that we have so many individuals, businesses, and community groups who are committed to creating a Mississauga where no one goes hungry.”

The campaign – which ran from November 18 to January 5 – was sponsored by the Nissan Canada Foundation. The drive received support from over 140 volunteers and 200 community event organizers.
