Meet Dawn, Food Bank 2 Home Client

You helped deliver Much-Needed food and hope during this crisis

Dawn has always fought to make a better life for her family. She’s suffered for years from chronic conditions that have left her unable to work. But that hasn’t stopped her from being a dedicated single mom to her two sons—one with serious health problems of his own. Even though money’s tight, she also finds ways to help her neighbours, a family of 8 who’ve recently immigrated to Canada.

“It’s important to pay it forward and help when you can,” she says.

Dawn’s selfless nature is even more inspiring because she and her boys are facing an especially hard situation right now. Dawn was recently diagnosed with cancer, on top of her pre-existing health issues. While she waits for crucial surgery, she’s left with constant pain and a vulnerable immune system. Then, COVID-19 hit. Dawn and her sons couldn’t leave home for fear of exposing her to the virus. Her eldest son, Eric—the sole breadwinner for the family—was laid off from his job. In the blink of an eye, they could no longer afford rent and food.

Thankfully, Dawn’s family got help from caring neighbours like you. She reached out to The Mississauga Food Bank. “They helped right away. Took my order, and in a few days I had groceries delivered to my door.” Dawn is so thankful that she doesn’t have to worry about putting nutritious food on the table during this difficult time.

“The Food Bank really took the time to understand my family’s needs. I have a restricted diet because of my health, and they make sure that I get what I need.” She was even pleasantly surprised to get high-quality food for her dog, Charlie. Every member of her family was taken care of!

Dawn has a message for you: “Thank you very much. You’ve helped us a lot when we’ve needed it.”

Dawn’s family is one of over 500 relying on the Food Bank 2 Home program during the COVID-19 pandemic. The program has grown twelve-fold in the past few months, feeding and protecting our most vulnerable neighbours. Thank you for making the Food Bank 2 Home program possible!
