Jeremy's story

There was a time when Jeremy felt very alone in the world. He lives with a disability that leaves him unable to work. He doesn’t have family to rely on. He spent most of his days alone at home, worrying about where his next meal would come from.

“I’m on the Ontario Disability Support Program,” he says, “But I wasn’t getting enough money to buy food and cover all my necessities. The money I get barely helps to pay rent and some of my bills.” Thankfully, a friend pointed him towards his neighbourhood food bank, The Compass—one of The Mississauga Food Bank’s agencies.

His life changed the day he first walked in. “They’ve always been very supportive and friendly,” he says.

“They treat me like part of their family.” Thanks to your generosity, Jeremy has fresh, nutritious food to eat—without having to worry about his rent cheque bouncing, or his heat being cut off in the dead of winter.

Along with the hampers of nourishing food, he’s found a community who’s there for him whenever he needs friendship and support. Before COVID-19, Jeremy took part in many of the programs offered at his neighbourhood food bank, including community breakfasts and lunches, a support group, and summer barbecues.

He’s sad that the pandemic has put these cherished community events on hold. He’s hopeful that he’ll be able to get together and laugh with his friends again soon. Jeremy is so grateful for the generous support of neighbours like you, who help bring nutritious food, friendship, and peace of mind to those who need it.

He considers you a part of his extended food bank family. “Please keep up the good work!” he says. “You are changing and saving a lot of lives. I don’t think we would be able to have a decent life if it wasn’t for the food bank and the people who work there and help out.” Thank you so much for caring for neighbours like Jeremy.
