Quilting for community
One of The Mississauga Food Bank’s fantastic volunteers, Wali, has gone above and beyond to fundraise for her community during the pandemic.

“I first read about The Mississauga Food Bank in the local newspaper; it was hosting an open house to recruit new volunteers. My family has always been involved in volunteering from back home, so it was something I always wanted to do myself.
My background in Food and Nutrition gave me the perfect opportunity to be part of the organization. Volunteering at the food bank gave me the opportunity to give back to my community and work with other volunteers in a rewarding way.
The Mississauga Food Bank provides such an important service for our community and I’m so proud to be part of it. It was a humbling moment to be one of the recipients of the Volunteer Service Award last year.
It is important for all of us to realize the needs of the most vulnerable members of our community, and it is good to see many young people give their time and develop an understanding of the needs of their community. It’s great to see corporate groups visit TMFB as well, I hope to see more of these groups return once the effects of the pandemic begin to subside. COVID-19 has had a serious impact on people’s livelihoods and has increased demand on the services provided by TMFB and their network. I know the donation raised from the sale of the quilts I’ve made will have a positive impact on ending hunger in Mississauga.”
