Anna Mikus is a big Maple Leafs fan – and she’s also the star of our volunteer Spotlight Sunday today!

Anna volunteers as one of our Food Bank 2 Home drivers, delivering food to neighbours in her car (that proudly displays her Maple Leafs blanket!). Anna learned about The Mississauga Food Bank during the pandemic and, looking for an opportunity to give back to her community, began volunteering after she retired in the fall of 2021.

“I was amazed at how many people relied on or were actually starting to use food banks throughout the pandemic. I had no idea until I started researching the stats on how many people in Mississauga relied on The Mississauga Food Bank. I thought it was primarily a Toronto issue. Then I heard about the Food Bank 2 Home program through an older family friend who relied on the program while she was sick and had no extended family support. I was so grateful to The Mississauga Food Bank for helping those in need, such as seniors, individuals with disabilities and even single mothers within our community. It resonated with me and I simply felt I needed to help.”

Volunteering makes Anna feel like she’s making a big difference in the lives of her neighbours.

“I’m able to help not only by bringing them food, but sometimes lend a listening ear or simply share a smile. Or answer any questions they may have. Help put them at ease with no judgement. I believe it gives our clients hope. I am very fortunate that I have the gift of time and the means to help. There really is no greater joy than being able to help improve people’s lives within your community.”

Thank you, Anna, for generously giving of your time and heart!
