Thanks to Overwhelming Community Support – Mayor Crombie’s City-Wide Thanksgiving Food Drive raised an unprecedented $225,409 and 265,611 pounds of food for hungry neighbours.
This Thanksgiving, Mayor Crombie, Tim Hortons, Rabba Fine Foods, Mississauga Fire & Emergency Services, and the Mississauga Board of Trade (MBOT) partnered with The Mississauga Food Bank to issue a City-Wide Food Drive Challenge – with goals of raising $125,000 and 225,000 pounds of food by October 13 to feed hungry neighbours across the city.
Thanks to the tireless efforts of Mayor Crombie, her staff, and incredible partnerships with local community groups, businesses, and individuals, the campaign far exceeded these goals, raising 265,611 pounds and $225,409 – enough to distribute food for 883,536 meals.
“Let me thank and celebrate all residents, schools, businesses and community groups who are supporting and caring for people, families and hungry neighbours in need, by generously participating in the 2017 Mayor’s Citywide Food Drive #OneBagChallenge,” Mayor Bonnie Crombie said. “This annual food drive campaign has once again far exceeded our collection and fundraising goals by raising 265,611 pounds of non-perishable foods and $225,409 in donations. Today’s results are further proof that Mississauga is a city that comes together and cares. My heartfelt thanks to everyone who donated their time, talent and treasure toward making this year’s food drive another complete success.”
Hundreds of local businesses, community groups, and individuals across the city responded to the Mayor’s #OneBagChallenge, posting photos and videos to social media and challenging friends and colleagues to donate food. In the Corporate Challenge, BDO Canada LLP came out on top, raising food for an impressive 16,095 meals through combined donations of food and funds. Olive Grove School and Philip Pocock Catholic Secondary School won the School Challenge, raising food for 2,879 meals and 2,843 meals respectively.
“Since Mayor Crombie began championing our Thanksgiving Campaign, we have seen an incredible increase in support and donations to feed our hungry neighbours” said Chris Hatch, executive director of The Mississauga Food Bank. “Without her passionate leadership and the tremendous generosity of the Mississauga community, we would not be able to feed the thousands of our neighbours who rely on us.”
The Mississauga Food Bank provides food for healthy meals year-round for families, children, and seniors in need and has an ongoing need for donations of food and funds.
