During this difficult time, The Mississauga Food Bank is working with our network of agencies to ensure our most vulnerable neighbours in Mississauga have access to healthy and nutritious food. As the central food bank for the City, we are responsible to ensure there are adequate programs available to meet the needs of all who may be struggling financially and need food.

A growing number of individuals and families are accessing their neighbourhood food banks, with  a 10% increase across the City. Our Food Bank 2 Home program has also more than doubled its number of registered households over the last month. We wanted to do more to support our neighbourhood food banks and other agencies such as emergency pantries and meal programs.

Here are some of the steps we took:

  • The Mississauga Food Bank increased communication with our agencies to ask what their increased needs are during the crisis. What we’ve heard from our neighbourhood food banks is that their needs vary across the city, and so we wanted to provide immediate relief to ensure they have what they need to get through this difficult time.
  • To start, we purchased and sent personal protective equipment to agencies with a steady supply continuing in the weeks to come. We’ve been working directly with each organization to ensure the right amount of food is being delivered and sending pre-packaged hampers to some of our agencies who need an extra helping hand.

This week, we also provided a little extra support to our nine neighbourhood food banks and 35 other programs who are operational during this pandemic  by  granting $105,000 to ensure the safety of clients, volunteers, and staff and to support these agencies’ operations. This was only possible thanks to the overwhelming support we have received from the community in the last few weeks.

As the needs of our community continue to evolve, The Mississauga Food Bank is here to help all food programs in Mississauga get through these difficult times. Thank you for supporting The Mississauga Food Bank so that we can ensure no one in Mississauga goes hungry.
