Today is World Humanitarian Day! A global celebration of people helping people.

Every year, the United Nations pays tribute to humanitarian workers and honours those who continue to provide life-saving support and protection to people most in need.

The United Nations hopes to transform the world through their 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action by all developed and developing countries in a global partnership.

Our work aligns with many of these goals, in particular the following three SDGs:

1. No Poverty: End poverty in all its forms everywhere.

Advocacy Allies

Thanks to our new team of volunteer Advocacy Allies, we are able to continue promoting civic engagement and advancing policy recommendations that will be most impactful in reducing poverty, food bank use, and food insecurity at its source. Learn more about our advocacy allies here.

2. Zero Hunger: End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture.

Community Market

Each day, food bank users face the difficult choice of what to give up in order to cover necessities. Our Community Market brings free, fresh fruit and vegetables to high-priority neighbourhoods to feed hungry children, seniors, families, and other neighbours in need. Through this program and the support of the community, we’ve been able to provide appropriate and nutritious food. Learn more about our Community Market here.

12. Responsible Consumption and Production: Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns.

ReclaimFRESH

Every year in Canada, 44 million tonnes of perfectly edible food is lost or wasted due to surplus quantities or minor, superficial defects. Our ReclaimFRESH Food Rescue Program allows us to provide this food to our hungry neighbours. Through our partnerships with local grocery stores, wholesalers, farmers and food producers, ReclaimFRESH provided food for over 400,000 meals in the past year. Learn more about ReclaimFRESH here.
