To say that The Mississauga Food Bank could not function without our volunteers is an understatement – their commitment is immeasurable and invaluable. Members of our community invest more than 10,000 hours every year in helping to fight hunger and feed hope in Mississauga.
All volunteer registration and scheduling is done on the website. Shifts fill up quickly so be prepared to plan well in advance. Some volunteer positions require screening and/or approval by our Volunteer Coordinator. All shifts require a commitment to work as scheduled.
Food sorters work in the warehouse under the supervision of warehouse staff and Lead Volunteers. Volunteers work together to check best-before dates; sort and pack food; build, fill, label, scan and palette boxes; recycle packaging, etc. Orientation, training and assignments will be given at the start of the shift. Must be able to read food labels and be 16 yrs. or older – unless accompanied by an adult.
Mornings are reserved for individual volunteers, afternoons are reserved for groups of volunteers. Wednesday evening ‘Family and Youth’ shifts are specifically designed to meet the volunteer requests of children and youth. Children 8 – 15 yrs. must accompanied by a registered and scheduled adult.
Drivers work with a Food Pick-up and Delivery Assistant to pick up food donations and to deliver food to our member agencies. Must be comfortable driving a truck with a 16’ reefer box, have at least a G license (DZ preferred), be able to lift up to 50 lbs., be fluent in English, and be at least 25 yrs. old. All shifts must be approved by our Volunteer Coordinator.
Since there is only 1 volunteer Truck Assistant scheduled per day it is imperative that this volunteer be reliable and work as scheduled.
Truck Assistants work with the Truck Driver to pick-up and deliver food. Must be able to lift heavier items, be fluent in English and be at least18 yrs. old. All shift requests must be approved by our Volunteer Coordinator.
Since there is usually only 1 Truck Assistant scheduled per day it is imperative that this volunteer be reliable and work as scheduled.
Admin. Assistants answer the phone, respond to emails, greet visitors, give tours, scan, photocopy, file, use postage machine, stock and organize supplies, etc. All applicants must be interviewed and trained by our Volunteer Coordinator before signing up for shifts. Must commit to working at least 1 shift/week and be 18 yrs. or older.
Office Assistants sort incoming mail, prepare mass mailings, photocopy, etc. All applicants must be screened and approved before signing up for shifts. 18 yrs. +
Food Drive Volunteer
During our annual Food and Fundraising Drives, volunteers represent The Mississauga Food Bank at grocery stores across the city during our grocery store collection days. Volunteers collect food and cash donations from shoppers. Must be 16 yrs. or older unless accompanied by an adult.
Board of Directors
The Mississauga Food Bank Board of Directors provides volunteer oversight and leadership to operations and strategy for the organization. The Board meets monthly with the exception of July and/or August. If you are interested in potentially joining the board, please contact Chris Hatch, Executive Director.

**Please note that we are no longer able to accept court-ordered volunteers and will not be providing letters confirming hours served for mandated/court-ordered volunteer service. NO EXCEPTIONS.
